The History Behind a Word

Do you know that the term "handicapped" came from England? The historical tradition for people with disabilities to stand on street corners and beg for money by taking off their hats, or "caps", is where this term came from. Though one's initial reaction may be one of pity or disgust, it is amazing to think of the resilience of these people. They were survivors. And even if it meant they had to stand on a street corner and beg, they were willing to do it to stay alive. BRAVO!
